Understanding the Rage Behind the Canadian Parliamentary Prorogue

On December 30th, 2009, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper rang up Canada’s Governor General, Michaelle Jean to prorogue the Canadian Parliament.  Jean granted permission (as a good Governor General always does), and the Canadian legislative assembly was officially put into suspension until March 2010.
Since then, Canadians have been divided into two camps:
A) ones who are appalled by Harper’s seemingly despotic power and
B) people who just don’t care.
(Personally, I do not know anyone from a camp C who is ecstatic for prorogation.  If you do, let me know.)

It’s an interesting …

Obama: Too Much Respect for the Constitution?

After Senate passed their version health-care reform on Christmas Eve, the prevailing wisdom was that Congressional Democrats would quickly resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions so that the President could sign the bill and use his State of the Union address to pivot to a new job-focused legislative agenda. Scott Brown’s victory on Tuesday in the Massachusetts Senate election now means the era of the Democratic Party’s senatorial “supermajority” is over and brings the fate of American healthcare reform into question.
An obvious solution would be for …

Who Is Our Neighbour Up North?

It’s downright puzzling how little we know about Canada.
Is it from our blind faith in our government, and the false sense of security that it provides within the iron-clad border, which induces this temporal apathy on our surroundings? It is this “I feel safe in America, I don’t care what happens outside” disposition. Sadly, this mentality has caused most Americans to live in a myoscopic bubble within a globalized world, stripping them from proper insight and awareness.
The basic animal instinct to be alert and aware of its surroundings …

Ontario NDP Leadership “Debate” – Feb.05, 2009

As the two NDP candidates stood up and left, I felt as if I was sitting through a horrible movie, wishing God could reimburse the time of my life that was forever gone. I had a yearning to slash the seats in protest, except slashing wooden seats would prove less dignifying than cushioned seats. I sat, empty-minded, in disappointments.
The debate (scheduled from 4pm~6pm) was a chance for the four NDP candidates, Gilles Bisson, Andrea Horwath, Michael Prue, and Peter Tabuns, to garner support from NDP members for …

You Are In Politics (You Just Don’t Know It)

When one hears ‘politics’, one would associate it with players like senators, congressmen, ministers, liberals, conservatives. These people congregate in assemblies, parliaments, congress, senates in order to crank out bills, legislations, and policies. Frankly, these words stir boredom of suicidal level. It is no surprise that politics turn most of us away to pursue things more exciting in life like wealth, romance, and the arts.
Taking a step back, however, you will soon notice that everything you cherish and desire, are bound by this very dreadful thing called …

Obama Presidency Not So Transparent Afterall

“Every time the American people want to know something that I, or a former president, want to withhold, we will have to consult with the Attorney General and the White House Council; whose business it is to ensure compliance with the rule of law. Information will not be withheld, just because I say so… Let me say it as simply as I can, transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstone of this Presidency.”
Merely three days after these words were spoken by President Obama, the American people want …

Why I’m Excited for Obama’s Inauguration – January 20, 2009

I’ll be frank. I have not been an avid fan of to-be-President Obama. Make no mistake, there is a clear difference between ‘not a fan’ and disdain. I do not resent the man, like the disdain I hold for the existing President, I simply don’t share the same overwhelming enthusiasm as the next Hollywood celebrity (Oprah, Johannson, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hanks, and the likes). I still find it astounding that such level of enthusiasm can be generated when the man hasn’t really done anything yet.
Although I …

More Idiocy in the McCain Camp – Governor Arnold

The idiocy from the McCain camp has never failed to reach new heights; its depth of stupidity has never failed to surprise. Perhaps this is no fault of John McCain himself, but surely, he appears to surround himself with idiots.
It was merely a week ago that an article surfaced, recounting an incident where John McCain’s brother, “Joe-the-plumber’, called 911 because he was stuck in traffic; a clear abuse of civil services. A well-educated 2nd grader should know dialing 911 is for emergencies only and perhaps a not-so-educated 5th …

Top 5 Oddest Obama Endorsements

Obama’s gotten a lot of big-name endorsements: Oprah, DeNiro, Scarlett Johansson and those guys who wrote that song with Obama’s voice-over, in addition to a long list of celebrities who know little about politics.
It came as no surprise. Afterall, Obama is hip and black. (Just think of the popular girls laughing behind Scarlett’s back if she’d endorsed an old white man!). However, behind the smoke screen of celebrity endorsements is a list of big-name endorsers that are puzzling and some downright troubling, that demands more attention than …

Direct Obama-Fires On NAFTA-gate

What IS NAFTA-gate? My point – exactly. NAFTA-gate is perhaps one of the most incriminating confirmation on Obama’s integrity. All these shallow accusations on Obama’s racist pastor, and his Muslim background are merely theatre, which does nothing but booster Obama’s support base by highlighting the ignorance of the McCain camp.
So what is NAFTA-gate?
On the eve of the Ohio Democratic Primary back in February 2008, a leaked memo surfaced detailing a conversation between Obama’s senior economic advisor, Austen Goolsbee, with the Canadian consul general. The conversation (based …
